The eco-actors network of the Mont-Viso Biosphere Reserve

The Mont-Viso Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, on its French side, encompasses a high mountain area characterised by rurality, the seasonality of economic activities (mountain farming, livestock raising, tourism), and a rich natural and cultural heritage. Low population density and an ageing demographic pose significant challenges for landscape conservation and the revitalisation of the social fabric. Despite these difficulties, local communities show a deep-rooted connection to the territory and a growing commitment to sustainable development models.

Geographical isolation, pressure on natural resources due to seasonal tourism, and the difficulty of retaining young people make the territory vulnerable from both ecological and socio-economic perspectives. The need to find mechanisms that simultaneously ensure ecosystem conservation and strengthen local economies was the starting point for creating a network of actors committed to sustainability.

The “eco-actors network” project aims to bring together individuals and organisations from the territory who integrate sustainability into their daily activities. Through the signing of a commitment charter, regular meetings, training sessions and joint actions, the project promotes good practices that benefit both the natural environment and the local social and economic fabric. The goal is to build an active and inspiring community aligned with the values of the Biosphere Reserve.

The project involves local stakeholders from both the French and Italian sides of the reserve. It is based on an open participation model, where initiatives emerge from the actors themselves and are coordinated by the Parc Naturel Régional du Queyras. The programme includes training sessions, cross-border exchanges, and a shared communication strategy. Co-management and collaborative design have been key to consolidating a dynamic network in which personal motivation and strong convictions reinforce collective commitment.
