Member of mountain biosphere
Extensive farming and dairy cow raising transformed forests mainly into species-rich montane and sub-montane humid and dry grasslands on siliceous soils. Three bogs host numerous endangered animal and plant species.
Apart from agricultural activities, people make their living from small businesses and tourism. Since 2014 the Rhön Biosphere Reserve is certified as a Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark Sky Association.
