Regeneration of freshwater ecosystems
Since 2019, Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve has utilized national central investment to carry out comprehensive remediation of the freshwater ecosystem at the source of the Songhuajiang River, with the main measures including dismantling hydropower stations, restoring the previous waterway, constructing migratory pathways for aquatic species, and restoring ecological plant cover for the area occupied by the stations, and until now, 12 hydropower stations have been dismantled, 2.3 kilometers of the river pathways have been restored.

- Protect the diversity of aquatic species
- Protect the ecological environment
- Improve water quality
- Promote sustainable development
Lessons learnt:
- Protecting the ecological environment is the precondition for economic development, and economic development must be based on the protection of the ecological environment.
- Dismantling hydropower stations and water pollution control require the cooperation with government, business and all social parties.
- Removal of hydropower stations and water pollution control require scientific planning and proper arrangement to avoid blind construction.
