Pfälzerwald – Vosges du Nord (Germany – France)
The Pfälzerwald Biosphere Reserve in south-west Germany is characterised by species-rich mixed forests alternating with open and semi-open landscapes of meadow valleys, pastureland and orchards. Other typical elements of the cultural landscape are the imposing sandstone rocks, the numerous medieval castle ruins and the gently undulating vineyards that lie to the east of the low mountain range. Together with the Vosges du Nord, the Pfälzerwald forms the only cross-border biosphere reserve in Germany. The region is strongly characterised by forestry, viticulture and tourism.
