Araucarias (Chile)

The territory associated with the Reserve extends across the Andes mountain range, between the BíoBío River to the north, and the mountain range formed by the Villarrica and Lanín volcanoes to the south. It concentrates a large part of the vegetation distribution of the Araucaria species (Araucaria araucana) or Pehuén, the name given to this tree by the Mapuche-Pehuenche, whose culture is closely associated with these forests. The landscape of this area is dominated by geomorphology derived from volcanic and glacial processes. Numerous volcanic cones and calderas (more than 170), deposits of lava, ash and pyroclastic flows (lahars), along with valleys and lakes of glacial origin, prevail in the landscape of the Reserve.
