The Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, located in southeastern Nigeria, is one of the last remaining areas of rainforest sheltering critically endangered species such as the Cross River gorilla, the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee, and the drill. This mountainous enclave, difficult to access and surrounded by plantations and human settlements, plays a vital role as a refuge for these species, whose survival depends largely on the ongoing conservation efforts in the area.

The project currently underway at the sanctuary follows a comprehensive strategy focused on environmental protection and species conservation. A key component involves the deployment of community-based patrols made up of local rangers who carry out regular monitoring to dismantle snares, detect illegal activities, and reduce human pressure on the habitat. This system not only enhances surveillance but also provides employment and strengthens the connection between conservation and local wellbeing.

Another central pillar of the initiative is biodiversity monitoring using camera traps and other non-invasive methods to track the presence and movements of wildlife across the sanctuary. This data is essential for assessing the conservation status of species and tailoring management strategies to the specific realities of the landscape.

The project also implements educational and awareness-raising programmes in nearby communities, aiming to foster a culture of environmental respect, reduce human-wildlife conflicts, and promote sustainable practices. These efforts focus on building environmental consciousness from an early age and encouraging a collective identity linked to the protection of nature.

In addition, active habitat management is carried out, including the prevention and control of wildfires and the regulation of land use to prevent the spread of agriculture or settlements within the sanctuary boundaries. This proactive landscape stewardship is crucial for maintaining ecological connectivity and ensuring that wildlife has access to the space and resources it needs to thrive.

Ongoing scientific research supports the project, investigating the ecology, behaviour and health status of key species, as well as the broader ecological processes that sustain the sanctuary. This evidence-based approach allows for informed decision-making and helps to continuously improve conservation efforts on the ground.
