Experiences from the World Network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves
50 farms
50 farms in the Lungau region have been supported in the construction and extension of photovoltaic systems on the roofs of their agricultural buildings. The total output is 1 868 kWp. The goal of the project was to use the existing potential of agricultural buildings to generate renewable energy in the places where it will be used directly. The farms, who have a high energy consumption themselves, use parts of the produced energy whereas the rest will be fed to the public electricity grid. This way, the project contributes to eh local energy independence and generates additional income for the farms.
The project is a cooperation between the local agriculture association, the Salzburg AG (network operator and provincial energy supplier), the Climate and Energy Model Region (KlimaEnergieModellregion) and the Biosphere Reserve Management Lungau whereas the CEM coordinated the first steps, gave input to the possible funding systems and supported the public relations and information dissemination. The project is part of the Biosphere Reserve’s field of action “Energy and Mobility”.
