Western Nghe An (Vietnam)

Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve in was officially recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in September 2007 and the sixth biosphere reserve in Vietnam.

This is the largest biosphere reservout of 11 biosphere reserves in Vietnam with the total area of 1,299,795 ha. The biosphere reserve is a green corridor linking three core zones, including Pu Mat National Park, Pu Huong Nature Reserve and Pu Luong Nature Reserve, to provide continuity of habitat and habitats for maintain effective conservation of the rich biodiversity values of the area.

The biosphere reserve is located in the administrative boundaries of 9 mountainous districts of Anh Son, Con Cuong, Ky Son, Que Phong, Quy Chau, Quy Hop, Tan Ky, Thanh Chuong, and Tuong Duong with a total of 182 communes and towns, 2.125 villages in Nghe An province. This is the home of 6 ethnic groups: Thái, Thổ, Khơ Mú, Mông, Ơ Đu and Kinh. The diversity and rich cultural identity of ethnic minority groups is the greatest feature and pride of the western Nghe An region. Governments at all levels, departments, and communities work together to preserve and promote tangible and intangible cultural values.

Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve of is a site of high biodiversity value, convergence of rare species of plants and animals. Out of the 3,627 vascular plants species, 78 species are listed in the IUCN Red List (2010), 12 species listed in CITES list. Similarly, out of 942 animal species, there are 420 species listed in the IUCN Red List (2010), 57 species of CITES
